Box 1237 Saugatuck, MI 49453 Founded in 1994, LJC connects jazz performers and composers with audiences and the growing jazz communities along West Michigan. It sponsors and presents 4-5 concerts a year plus educational activities celebrating the area's jazz musical heritage. A primary venue, The Saugatuck Woman's Club, offers an intimate setting for jazz presentations. Membership is served by a board of directors and comprises casual jazz listeners as well as performers, educators, and industry representatives. It is entirely a volunteer organization. SEMJA provides jazz education to students at all levels through special programs in schools and throughout the Washtenaw county arts community. It supports live performance of jazz in Southeastern Michigan and distributes information about jazz through UPDATE, a monthly newsletter publication. In February SEMJA presents jazz concerts and lectures as part of Black History Month in numerous area high schools and middle schools. SEMJA organizes conferences for band directors to promote jazz education, and it mentors programs by experienced jazz artists in area schools. It also sponsors jazz performances at local venues through its own Meet The Artist events. West Michigan Jazz Society 304 Paris S.E. WMJS was organized with a goal to promote, preserve and perpetuate live jazz. The society promotes numerous events throughout the year and supports events presented by other arts organizations, schools and colleges in the West Michigan area. The society presents and promotes concerts and special events for the expressed purpose of bringing national and internationally known jazz artists to Grand Rapids and the West Michigan area. It also publishes a monthly newsletter, Jazz Notes, to promote upcoming events and activities. Ray Gill pioneered in 1987 the Jazz in the Schools program, which WMJS funds and administers in cooperation with the Grand Rapids Federation of Musicians, and the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids. WMJS also administers the Jimmy Forrest Scholarship Fund, under an umbrella agreement with the Grand Rapids Community College Foundation, awarding Jazz Scholarships of up to $2,000 each year to deserving young students. Box 15 Suttons Bay, MI 49682 Ph: (231) 271-8000 The SBJF is a non-profit arts organization led by trumpeter Harry Goldson, pianist Steve Sandner, and cornetist Gary Carden from the greater Sutton's Bay area. SBJF networks with the Sutton's Bay Chamber of Commerce, the Sutton's Bay Rotary, and Leelanau peninsula restaurants and wineries to sponsor the annual Sutton's Bay Jazz Festival the last Saturday in July at Sutton's Bay Marina. All proceeds from jazzfest benefit music scholarships at Northwestern Michigan College and other non-profit community projects.
