(Manhattan, KS)
D. Jordan welcomed all attendees, outlined chapter goals and
focus of meeting.
- AGENDA ITEMS -
E. Rodgers Educator Report:
- Regarding the DIJF Outstanding soloist awards - second
place was to be awarded by MSBOA. Perhaps it should be
therefore worded, “the MSBOA award goes to ________”, instead of
saying, “the second place award sponsored by MSBOA goes to ________”.
- The official 'Educational Advisor' for the Detroit
International Jazz Festival (DIJF) is Wayne State University. Out
of 24 Detroit high schools only two have jazz.
IAJE Toronto 2008:
- B. Coyle noted that since IAJE Toronto 2008 is in Canada we
should touch base with the IAJE Canada and invite some Canadian school
bands to participate in the 2008 DIJF.
- E. Rodgers asserted IAJE MI should confirm the Canadian
bands are playing solid jazz repertoire. Reportedly, this has not
been the case in the past.
Detroit International Jazz Festival (DIJF):
- S. Cowan queried, what is the ideal number of high school
and college band performances to feature each year at DIJF?
E. Rodgers states it is approximately 12 high schools and 4-5 college
bands.
- B. Coyle stated IAJE MI should contact DIJF director Terri
Pontremoli and review the situation for requirements/qualifications on
high school and college band participation in the DIJF.
- E. Rodgers encouraged sending photographs of the DIJF
student groups to the IAJE national office for website posting.
Michigan Music Conference:
- D. Jordan made a motion for the state chapter to purchase
an IAJE Michigan adv in the MMC (Michigan Music Conference) program
book, for January 2008 in Grand Rapids. A unanimous vote
approved purchasing the adv.
- D. Jordan surveyed, should the state chapter should invest
in a booth for MMC in Jan. 2008?
- B. Coyle reported that booth expenses doubled when the
conference moved to Grand Rapids. He had been wearing two hats at
the Hope College booth at MMC ’07 while also sporting an IAJE Michigan
pin or cap.
- D. Jordan states IAJE MI can try again to get a banner
constructed for the DIJF ‘08 via a collaborative MSBOA and IAJE sponsor
effort. There was a problem with the high-resolution graphics
requirement for files sent electronically to Texas banner
company. Hence, they did not get it done in time for DIJF ‘07.
- S. Cowan queried, what ever happened to the ‘Jazz Day’
planned for MMC 2008 that was suggested by Paul Stanifer at
MSBOA? Answer unknown, and more investigation needed. D.
Jordan says he will pursue this with P. Stanifer and further explore
the possibility.
Development:
- D. Naranjo reports the site is receiving 1-2K hits per
month on our website. We have a goal to get links back to our
site, which will generate even more hits. Major jazz programs,
like MSU and U-M, need to be linked to us.
- D. Naranjo outlined an emphasis on generating more new
memberships, noting the potentials of rebates from the national office.
- E. Rodgers reports there are many less-informed high school
band
directors out there that could benefit from jazz educational resources
offered on the IAJE Michigan website.
- D. Jordan urged members to communicate and respond to D.
Naranjo, especially for for educational/instructional
information. More information can also serve general public
viewing.
D. Jordan thanked everyone
present. Meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Scott
Cowan
IAJE Michigan Secretary
