(Manhattan, KS)
D. Jordan welcomed all attendees, outlined chapter goals and focus of
meeting.
- AGENDA ITEMS -
D. Naranjo welcomed upper-lower Michigan representative B. Sears from
Interlochen Arts Academy to the executive board. It is hoped the
unit can tap into more educational exposure for schools in the Upper
Peninsula.
D. Jordan thanked B. Coyle for all his significant contributions made
to IAJE Michigan as past president.
D. Jordan noted the unit staffed six IAJE adjudicators for DIJF 2007
weekend. The new Adjudication Forms (revised by IAJE Michigan)
were used for the first time by all DIJF adjudicators.
D. Jordan reported that the IAJE Michigan DIJF Outstanding Soloist
Award monies came from the following disbursement:
$1,000 IAJE Michigan
$
400 MSBOA (Paul Stanifer)
$
500 SEMJA (Southeast Michigan
Jazz Association)
-------
$1,900
total scholarships awarded
Follow-up discussion and review regarding the scholarship awarding
process is slated for the next unit meeting in January 2008.
D. Jordan noted that Kevin Dobreff, unit chapter treasurer, is absent
for medical reasons. A current Chapter Treasury Report will be
disclosed and sent by e-mail.
D. Naranjo expounded on planned efforts to post instructional content
on our site. Feedback and priority input from the exec board was
encouraged. A lingering question posed, “what do you want to make
available for users?” Dave Nixon, a state band director, runs a
site --banddirectors.com-- providing various “How to” pedagogical
topics. Potentials exist for having like content on our site through
video web casts, PDF files, jazz arranging and other pedagogical topic
areas.
S. Cowan queried on how many hits Dave Nixon’s site generates. A
follow-up is suggested.
B. McFarlin urged IAJE Michigan to partner with IAJE.org (e.g., through
a super link) to tap into their active/archived educational content
posted online.
D. Jordan reports we have a new, vital agenda advancing with MSBOA and
Paul Stanifer. A future goal could be having an IAJE MI
representative as judge at every MSBOA Jazz Festival. Also
mentioned was the possibility at the MSBOA Jazz Festivals sight-reading
should be eliminated; “hands on” clinic time with adjudicator should be
instated. Further idea, to rotate the judges with three listens
to bands while another judge gives a hands-on clinic to the band that
most recently performed.
B. McFarlin affirmed during weekend conversation with Paul Stanifer
that MSBOA is ''extremely proud of their relationship with IAJE
Michigan.''
D. Jordan queried, did anyone notice in the Detroit Free Press the
publicity for IAJE Michigan and the IAJE Convention in Toronto,
Canada? Expect four months turnaround to obtain an international
passport if applied for conventionally.
B. McFarlin reported it is possible to obtain a passport in one day for
an estimated cost of $300, going through the right source.
B. Nixon stated perhaps we could get the IAJE Reading Band performing
and giving clinics at colleges during the academic calendar season.
D. Jordan thanked everyone present. Meeting adjourned at 2:20 p.m.
