Agenda Items:
  • B. Coyle welcomed all attendees, outlined chapter goals and focus of meeting.
  • Treasurers Report:  current balance is approximately $3,600.
  • IAJE Michigan chapter update
B. Coyle reports we are in good shape in the eyes of IAJE international office. Our chapter is meeting required standards as declared by IAJE guidelines.  It is possible we quality for “exceptional state chapter requirements” which then entitles our chapter to monetary awards (e.g., admin credits granted from IAJE international to our state chapter).
    P. Stanifer (Executive Director, MSBOA) asked about minimum chapter requirements.  B. Coyle noted that requirements are listed on the IAJE.org website.

    B. Coyle restated a desire to look for opportunities to partner with MSBOA.  P.  Stanifer encouraged all chapter membership and supported the idea that IAJE Michigan sanction annual MSBOA jazz festivals.

    P. Stanifer reported the attendance at the last Michigan Music Conference (Jan '06) in Grand Rapids was 10,000 -- very significant.  He outlines a desire to continue advancing the IAJE Reading Band as well as rolling out additional jazz education clinics.  D. Naranjo recommended that jazz performances during the MMC be scheduled much earlier in the evening.  This positioning would heighten visibility of student jazz musicians and increase awareness for the jazz component within MMC.  B. Coyle articulated support of P. Stanifer statements.  He looks forward to expediting the implementation of the aforementioned initiatives.

  • Website Issues
D. Naranjo provided a status report on the content of the IAJE Michigan website and planned vision for ’07.  Development ideas are underway for reporting on what’s happening in jazz education statewide.  A content window for clubs, festivals, events, radio can be expanded to meet increased awarness for timely information.  Lots of networking opportunities exist to help spread the word about jazz in upper and lower northern Michigan.  These two regions can benefit from a closer connection through our site, increase identity and importance of jazz around the state, esp. upper Michigan.  Resourcing the site is recommended.

P. Stanifer recommended live webcasts on the site for ongoing jazz education development programs.  He mentions a possibility for: a) making PDF music charts available on the site; b) enabling free content made available for kids; and, c) volunteering to work with IAJE Michigan to help make such plans possible.  He outlined the importance for students to benefit from all state organizations coming together for a common purpose.

P. Brewer plans to put a link on his site (Aquinas College) back to IAJE MI site. He expressed a concern for providing Michigan band directors with available resources to address music education tools [e.g., “How and where do I get assistance with teaching my jazz rhythm section?”].  B. Coyle suggested the creation of a resource teams to assist state band directors.

B. Coyle thanked D. Naranjo again for his great work on the site.  He noted  the site supplies a communications function for serving membership, who can now leverage our online presence.

  • Spring Officer Elections
    B. Coyle reminded everyone about upcoming Spring officer elections.  If any individual or anyone known to be interested wishes to become involved then contact B. Coyle directly.

  • Open discussion
    D. Jordan stated that IAJE hosts the annual international conference, but not everyone can attend due to travel costs, scheduling issues.  A suggestion was advanced how to assist regional, state and local jazz education needs.

    B. Coyle notes there is a movement toward more regional festivals, but only some 200+ attended the recent Chicago Midwest Regional conference.  The IAJE International Executive Board is reviewing this.  Also, clinics for high school directors and a festival for band directors could be helpful.

    P. Stanifer stated that 90% of the schools in MSBOA do not have jazz programs.  This deserves further attention.

    B. Coyle proposed the possibility of more jazz clinics at the MMC, particularly rhythm section clinics.  P. Stanifer stated he will work with IAJE MI to offer a concentrated day of jazz education clinics at MMC in the future (target date – January 2008).

    J. Leach stated breaking down the drum set with other instruments rather than just throwing a student in front of an entire drum set would yield greater results.  P. Brewer stated jazz music to some classical music students seemingly comes across more like magic.  As jazz educators, we should work to demystify such impressions for them, where applicable.

    P. Stanifer reminded everyone that MSBOA and IAJE Michigan are sponsors of the Detroit International Jazz Festival.  He noted that MSBOA’s logo missed placement in the festival program (distributed at Hart Plaza).  He recommends for 2007 we should get festival organizers to confirm in advance logos/logo placement for both organizations as jazz edu sponsors.

B. Coyle thanked all in attendance.  Meeting adjourned at 3:20 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Scott Cowan
IAJE Michigan Secretary
