The disparity of jazz events between the Michigan Music Educators Conference (4) and the Illinois’s Music Conference (24) was discussed, reviewed.  The IAJE MI Executive Board was very excited at MSBOA Executive Director Paul Stanifer’s commitment to increase jazz events beginning with the 2008 conference.  Also commended was his commitment to move toward the IAJE sanctioning of all MSBOA Jazz Festivals.  B. Coyle to status this further, report back next Spring.

  • B. Coyle noted that D. Naranjo has done a tremendous job on the website this past year.
  • Website report
D. Naranjo has established relations with national IAJE office regarding unit chapter assistance.  They are very encouraging and supportive of our needs.  Increased frequency of monthly/bi-monthly communication with executive board member(s) on state jazz news and events is desired.  More links between our site and state music schools sites is also recommended, help from state exec board officers is needed to facilitate communications with key decision-makers.  A plan to network with band directors and other jazz sites with IAJE Michigan was reviewed.  Reports on jazz education clinics and master classes were recommended as possible feedback items, submitted by respective music department directors and/or student contacts.

  • B. Nixon suggested making a connection with the Western Michigan Jazz Society thru our website.  Discussion ensued about energizing other jazz communities including the northern Michigan region.

B. Coyle thanked everyone present.  Meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Scott Cowan
IAJE Michigan Secretary
