Agenda
Items:
- B. Coyle welcomed all attendees, outlined chapter goals and
focus of meeting.
- IAJE New York 2007 conference report: IAJE Michigan
was well represented through student performances and clinics at the
national conference. Positive feedback substantiates our jazz
education community is earning appreciable respect and visibility.
- Reminder extended to all that IAJE 2008 will be in Toronto,
Canada, and passports will be enforced for
international travel.
Ensuing conferences will be:
IAJE 2009 - Seattle,
WA
IAJE 2010 - New
York, NY
IAJE 2011 - New
Orleans, LA
- B. Coyle urges everyone to utilize our excellent IAJE
Michigan website, and to pass along a mention to other state education
colleagues you
encounter. We have requested to be linked to MSBOA (Michigan
School Band and Orchestra Association).
IAJE
Michigan Chapter Update:
- B. Coyle notes the IAJE Michigan chapter is now one of
eleven states to be officially recognized as “exemplary status” by the
IAJE national office.
- The IAJE national website will be
offering many new services and options. Some will be
interactive. Authorized access will be rolled out through IAJE
membership.
- Summer 08’ - IAJE Teacher training opportunities exist
in
Park City, UT. There is a state chapter president’s campaign
currently for jazz. A base fundraising target goal of $12
million is planned.
Elections:
- Unit chapter officer elections are coming this
spring.
Open
Discussion:
- There is exciting progress being made regarding an
administrative and promotional collaboration between IAJE Michigan and
MSBOA.
- B. Nixon acknowledged B. Coyle’s outstanding work of
bringing Michigan’s IAJE chapter from an almost charter loss to
exemplary status.
- R. Casteel asked about funding through IAJE for grants to
assist in bringing professionals to Michigan public schools. B.
Coyle responded that, yes, it is possible and IAJE National does have
some monies to tap into.
- B. Nixon remarked that it would be great to take the IAJE
Michigan reading band and perform more often and perhaps give some
clinics. K. Dobreff, M. Flaherty and R. Casteel offered
some possible performance ideas and venues.
IAJE
Michigan and MMC:
- B. Coyle notes we have established a dialogue with Paul
Stanifer (MSBOA) about a possible day during MMC that would emphasize
jazz topics (improvisation, rhythm section, education information,
etc.).
B. Coyle thanked all in
attendance. Meeting adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
