Agenda
items:
- B. Coyle welcomed all attendees and outlined chapter goals.
Rollout of processes for the upcoming state officer election
was reviewed by B. Coyle.
- K. Dobreff delivered the state chapter treasury
report. Item expenditures and account balances were given as:
Chapter expenditures - 2006 student
scholarships
Chapter profit - $303.09
Chapter balance - $4,536.41
- IAJE Michigan Scholarships were reviewed. Any
student who earns a performance timeslot at the DIJF (Detroit
International Jazz Festival) and who fills out an IAJE Michigan form is
qualified. This is the only venue presently for IAJE Michigan
scholarships.
- The directors of MSBOA voted to continue the relationship
that IAJE
Michigan and MSBOA (Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association)
currently enjoys, and to work on developing a dedicated jazz
performance day at
the 2008 Michigan Music Educators Conference in Grand Rapids.
- B. Coyle informed the board that a recent Illinois Music
Conference featured over 20 jazz related topics available for attending
educators.
- B. Coyle discussed a more formalized relationship between
IAJE Michigan and MSBOA regarding district and state jazz
festivals.
- Item Proposal: Executive Director Paul
Stanifer be appointed as an MSBOA
representative on the IAJE Michigan Executive Board -- proposed by B.
Coyle.
B. Coyle
will further investigate this possibility, and report what is
involved. The board gave support for the idea.
- IAJE National Office has recently awarded our Michigan
unit chapter with
“Exemplary Status”. We have received a minimum status
letter from the
national office outlining basic requirements to maintain a charter
status. With the exemplary status comes one honorary free dues
benefit available for a select individual
IAJE Michigan candidate.
- B. Nixon suggested a one-time honorarium for D. Naranjo
as
recognition of his outstanding work on the IAJE MI website.
It
was also suggested that Denis receive the honorary free dues that was
awarded our chapter from the national office for exemplary chapter
status. The motion was proposed by B. Nixon, seconded by D.
Jordan, and was unanimously carried by the executive board.
- The state and district MSBOA jazz adjudication form was
discussed. Some
elements/components on the form may be out of date. Conversation
is
ongoing between IAJE and MSBOA for streamlining the relevant
administrative and content considerations of the form.
- B. Sears, jazz director at Interlochen Arts Academy, was
suggested as a possible future candidate for IAJE Michigan president.
B. Coyle thanked everyone
present. Meeting adjourned at 11:25 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Scott
Cowan
IAJE Michigan Secretary
