Herbie Hancock brings five decades of jazz mastery to Symphony Center

stylistic elements in jazz,
Herbie Hancock has defied tradition over the years creating music that
expands the possibilities
of musical thought. With a career that has spanned over five
decades, many have hailed
Hancock as a visionary.
An Academy Award and multi-Grammy winner, Hancock is one of jazz's most
influential
and important jazz pianists and composers.
Joining Hancock will be Nathan East on
bass; Vinnie Colaiuta on
drums and Lionel Loueke on
guitar.

representing the European, Asian, and North American creative music
communities. The roster of internationally celebrated artists includes
performers from our own Detroit/Ann Arbor area.
This season KCH has been granted two awards from Chamber Music America;
one to fund the educational residency activities of the BassDrumBone
trio which, in addition to educational workshops, will lead the
Edgefest celebration parade through downtown Ann Arbor’s Kerrytown
District; and another to fund the performance of a recently completed
composition by 2007 Guggenheim award-winner Rudresh K. Mahanthappa.
A new feature this year will be a Symposium co-sponsored by the
University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. The first ever
Edgefest symposium, held in collaboration with the UM Institute for the
Humanities, will feature the pioneer trombonist and Columbia University
Professor George Lewis, who will discuss the social ramifications of
improvisation. He will be joined by other musicians and faculty from
the UM School of Music and American Studies program.

This spirited vocalist from Nashville is arguably the most promising
jazz voice on the horizion, yet not many know her name. Soon that
may change. The tender 20-year-old swings thoroughly thanks to an
innate sense of phrasing and interpretation of a lyric. At age
five it was listens to Ella Fitzgerald renditions of ‘The Lady is a
Tramp’ that cemented a horizon filled with music. Noted
actress/singer Kathryn Grayson of MGM fame says of Price: "The best
young voice I've heard, period. No one around can even touch her voice
and style -- a style all her own." On the web:

A

typically grabs the opening note and embarks on a musical journey
sensuous and energetic. Certain blends of smooth jazz and funky

unmistakable glisten from lauded Motor City roots. Besides lofty
projects with Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, he's best known for
collaborations with multi-Grammy winner and internationally renowned
pianist Bob James. “A truly unique musician and a dexterous
wizard of the saxophone” -Bob James. On the web:
