International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE)
The mission of IAJE is to assure the continued worldwide growth and development of jazz and jazz education.  Current memberships totals upwards of 9,000 educators, students, performing musicians,  music industry representatives, and enthusiasts spanning 56 countries.  An affiliation of 36 state unit chapters provides local representation for the national headquarters office, located in Manhattan, KS,
helping to elevate programs, sponsorships, and implementation of music education initiatives.  A valued role for IAJE is the promotion of teacher training institutes, an artist outreach network, and talent recognition programs.
IAJE publishes a monthly magazine, Jazz Education Journal, serving the jazz education community and all IAJE general membership.

An executive level subsidiary, Jazz Alliance International, is dedicated to expanding the audience and visibility of jazz and, through education, leadership and advocacy, seeks to raise the profile of the jazz art form and foster better working relationships within the global jazz community. The Board consists of members from both the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors and includes the foremost decision-makers in jazz education, the music industry, and artistic circles.  Yet another recognized vehicle for education and outreach at IAJE is the Campaign for Jazz, a multi-million dollar fundraising initiative that connects jazz audiences through consolidated research, marketing, and advocacy.

IAJE collaborates with recognized educational partners to promote audiences and influences in jazz education.  These partners, among others, include the Smithsonian Institute, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Approaching its 36th year, IAJE's annual jazz education conference (upcoming January 7-10, 2009 in Seattle, Washington) attracts 8-10,000 global educators, musicians, students, recording industry, and business professionals representing over 40 countries.  It is regarded as the largest and most significant  industry summit for jazz educators worldwide.

Jazz Band I, Rodney Whitaker, conductor
The 16-piece Jazz Band I is a young swinging college band playing the repertoire of the great jazz masters, including soul, swing, blues and gospel. The group’s instrumentation includes vocals, bass, piano, drums saxophone (5), trumpet (4), and trombone (4).

Octet I, Jazz Band II Derrick Gardner, conductor
The 8-piece Octet I perfectly blends the combination of big band with small group performance. This ensemble features our most advanced students and gives them more opportunity to improvise. The group’s instrumentation includes bass, drums, piano, tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone and vocals.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Sunny Wilkinson, conductor
The MSU Vocal Jazz Ensemble is comprised of seven singers and four rhythm section players, including piano, bass, drums and congas. MSU Assistant Professor of Vocal Jazz Sunny Wilkinson, who just went from a part-time to full-time faculty member in fall 2004, established the group to help students sing in close harmony, develop their musicianship, and deepen their understanding of jazz music. They also get experience singing with a sound system and working with a rhythm section.
